Current Wake Forest University Students

Last updated: July 26, 2026 – I do not anticipate being able to mentor students researchers during Fall 2026 and I do not currently have funding for paid research positions.

Current WFU computer science students interested in working with me on research in Spring 2027 or later are welcome to send me an email. Please make sure the following information is in your email:

  • Add [WTPROJ] to the subject line of your email to help me differentiate inquiries about research from other emails.
  • Include in the email body
    • Your year at Wake Forest and what your intended or declared majors and minors are
    • The semester in which you are hoping to begin research
    • A short description of:
      • Research areas that are of interest to you
      • How those areas overlap with my work and interests as described on my research webpage

WFU Undergraduate Students

Faculty in the Department of Computer Science present their research as part of a course titled CSC 781 in the Fall semester of each year. Attending these talks is a good way to learn about the faculty of and opportunities to undertake research within the Department of Computer Science.

Undergraduate students interested in summer research funding should consider the Wake Forest Summer Research Fellowship Program. The funding for this program comes from the University. The deadline for applying for this type of funding is in the early Spring and requires engagement with and approval of the summer mentor.

Rising seniors meeting the relevant GPA thresholds will be invited by the Department of Computer Science to participate in the department’s Honors Program and complete a Senior Honors Thesis. Invitations to participate are sent to students near the start of the Fall semester and proposals are due in October. Proposals require mentor approval.

I do not supervise research for independent study course credit.

The academic background needed to engage in a research project will vary based on the project. For projects I mentor that have a significant amount of programming required, it is desirable that students have completed at least through the Wake Forest CSC 201. Data Structures and Algorithms course.

WFU Graduate Students

Faculty in the Department of Computer Science present their research as part of CSC 781, a required course for graduate students offered in the Fall semester. Graduate students should attend these presentations and reach out to faculty whose research is of interest.

If I have funding, I will hire graduate students to engage in research on the projects associated with that funding. I also mentor students completing a Masters thesis or project when the topics are related to my areas of interest and work.

Future Graduate Students

Please note that Wake Forest offers a Master of Science in Computer Science graduate degree but does not offer a PhD in Computer Science.

Individual faculty in the Department of Computer Science can not directly admit students into the graduate program; instead, decisions are made by a committee. If your research interests overlap with mine, please indicate as such in your application by mentioning my name and how our interests overlap as part of answering the research questions we ask applicants to address as part of their personal statement. Mentioning a faculty member does not guarantee admission nor funding as a research assistant.
